You are on to something.
If you had a shorter exposure, the stars will pin-point and I think the overall look would convey night even more. (Love the clouds.)
Try the rotary OM with a clear, not front coupled shot. Try to light from more a 90 degree angle from the right.
I like the shot of the freight cars a lot. Light from a 90 degree angle, overall darker, stars sharp, level and maybe someone in uniform with a lantern. You maybe?
