They all swung... if the fireboy would pull the cord! But the automatic ringer just moved the clapper (it was more efficient than moving the entire bell, and used less air... always a consideration on a steam locomotive). Many if not all of the K-36's had an anti-rotation bar on top of the bell to keep it from swinging in a complete circle if the fireboy got a bit too energetic in yanking the rope.
