I remember when the railroad exiled me from California to Texas. I clicked my heals and said goodbye to civilization as I knew it. Then I got to Texas (beautiful downtown Hearne to be exact) and found some really interesting folk. Good folk. Who cooked good BBQ (once you learned how to eat off newpaper with just a knife attached to a chain).
I have three major recollections of my time in Texas. The most important is I made some really really good friends who remain good friends 40 years later (although no pink t-shirts). Two, I have never seen fog so thick....I had to open my door on the Hempstead Highway to find the white line. And three I had to drive to a derailment in the middle of the night through rain so hard that the windshield wipers were totally useless. But the friends (and the BBQ) trump the fog and rain, so I had a good time in Texas. But PINK t-shirts......my gawd Texas must be changing (do they still have long neck country radio?).
