But the problem with CDs is a rather limited lifespan, depending where it is stored and how it is manufactured. The protocol for reading a book should still be supported in 30-50 years. That probably won't be the case for CDs or DVDs.

I found a box of punched cards when cleaning out my parents house. There's no way to get the information off them anymore.
