On pages 331-332 of Gilbert Lathrop's "Rio Grande Glory Days," he talks about the addition of an extra baggage car carrying lcl freight between Salida and Gunnison prior to abandonment of passenger service, and the trainmen demanding freight pay, which Lathrop says was higher than passenger pay. Why were freight wages higher than passenger? Had they always been that way?
