Look closely at the loco. The stack is very short.About 1/4 as tall as the boiler diameter. You can see where the smoke is rising in front of the tall part. There is a dome just ahead of the cab, probably the steam dome. Is that a combination sand dome and water tank? Whistle is on top of the cab.

The Marquesas Islands were controlled by the French, so I would assume it's a French locomotive.

And what I found on the net was the islands are volcanic, had barely enough agriculture to sustain themselves before colonization. All they had to export was deep sea fish.
