"These are the 2 pictures of USA 3000 I took in August of 1957. Note that I
was a teenager at that point and my photographic skills were still in the
making. Lt. Col. John Whitfield from Ft. Eustis, Virginia was in charge of this
engine and was there in Durango when I took these pictures. He and I became
friends and I later ended up as a second lieutenant at Ft. Eustis in the
Transportation Corps. The 3000 handled most of the Farmington turns at this
point and always operated with one of the RPO cars for spare parts and tools. It
had problems with the Farmington trackage and often derailed while switching. It
was not too well liked by the crews as I recall. In posting these, please note
