Yes, room was probably the the top deciding factor in locating the facilities on the west side. Another factor is that the weather was much more cooperative in the winter on the west side of Altman pass. Between Hancock & the east portal of Alpine Tunnel probably had the worst snow problems on the entire South Park system, where as the west side was relatively calm. Thus it was a more inhabitable place during the winter.
