Karl (Hovanitz) came up with it. You'd have to ask him as to his exact line of reasoning, but in any event it's quite appropriate for the ungainly, hastily-pieced-together monster it is.

Being one who likes things with stories behind them, however, "Thumper" is still my favorite moniker for the POS. I really don't miss that pile, but nobody believes me!
