This was actually a common on the very early mallets. CB&Q had several that were used in the Black Hills. I think Santa Fe was the only? one with the accordian boiler joint. The early mallets were not too successful and most did not steam well. Superheating and bigger fireboxes made the design successful, one reason many of the early ones were rebuilt or salvaged.
