Thoughts on denims:
1. Years ago (and maybe even now) not all lengths were made or sold and so you had to roll up the pants legs.
2. Denim will shrink with each wash and then stretch during wearing. Ever notice how a fresh washed pair is a pain to put on; but, by the end of the day you can stick your arm inside the waist band.
3. Old photos of the northwest logging lines show the engine crews wearing trousers that slump over the footwear. But the brakemen, would all wear their denims with the pants legs cut off above the ankle. That being a matter of safety -- nothing loose to get in the way when trying to catch a log car.
