This was a problem for more than tourist railroads. The last Willamette locomotive built had a Worthington feed water heater, and the original owner, J. Neils Lmbr. Co., reported a considerable savings in fuel and water over their Pacific Coast Shay. (The well known Klickitat L. & L. No. 7.) But when the Willamette was sold to Rayoneer Inc. they removed the feed water heater for maintenance reasons. At the time Rayoneer maintained a large stable of steam locomotives and their maintenance forces were pretty good, so if they discarded it the troubles must have outweighed the economies.
Incidently, both locomotives still exist.
