The Newfoundland operation was 42" gauge. I understand that it receive some upgrades of equipment in the early 40s because of war-time traffic. Some place I heard that the US helped pay for this.

By the way, until some years after WWII Newfoundland was a English Crown Colony -- not part of Canada.
