Yes, I was around the first weekend the NNRY ran. I traded off running with another guy that weekend. They got us some real hard coal, that made itty bitty red hot cinders that went straight through the smokebox netting and lit the whole world on fire. We kept the local fire dept real busy that weekend.
Some local "talent" broke into a track worker's shed up at the Copper Flat mine and found a pail of grease. They smeared it all over the rails in the 3% grade above Ruth. It was all #40 could do to drag that train up the hill and the grease was the kiss of death. We ended up doubling the 3 car train up the hill - and barely made it at that.
It was a rather eventful weekend.
