According to Doris Osterwald, contemporary accounts stated engineer Roy Crutcher was killed in the accident. Fireman Joe Dalla survied and ran engines almost to the end of Rio Grande ownership of the line.
Boomer railroader Woody Ralston said Dalla was one of his favorite engineers to fire for.
Also Claude Allbee survived a derailment with the 489 as well.
