Paul Mayer was the fireman on the 483 who got killed. Paul had been working for a short time when the wreck happened. His younger brother, Jim, went to work out of DGO in the 60's. He later became trainmaster in DGO and was Supt of the D&S in its early days before returning to the DRGW to finish out his career.
None of 485's parts ended up on the 483. What parts were salvagable on 485 ended up on 489. 485's most serious damage was to its cylinders on the right side. The entire steam chest and valve chamber was crushed as well as superficial damage to the cab, etc. There might have been boiler damage, but I've never heard of such. I've never heard what happened to the tender.
483's injuries were rather minor, a bent tender and a mangled cab. There is a shot in the "Grande Gold" book showing the 483 a year later. the repair was a "patch up job". I shows new paint on the fireman's side of the cab, a new electrical fuse box and conduit, and nothing else. The sand dome still showed scars of being buried in the dirt. It doesn't even look like the tender was repainted.
