Train Service on Cumbres Pass is Suspended Again

Train service between Alamosa and Durango and Alamosa and Santa Fe. N.M., which was annulled Tuesday because of the severe wind and snow storms raging had not been resumed Wednesday. Indications are that if the storm abates Wednesday evening a rotary will be operated over Cumbres pass to Chama about 3 o’clock Thursday morning and a snow plow will precede the passenger train on the Santa Fe branch to clear out the drifts. However; if the storm has not slackened no trains will be operated Thursday.

The agent at Cumbres reports that only 2-1/2 inches of new snow has fallen in the recent storms, but the high wind is playing havoc with the 84 inches of old snow left on the ground and the cuts are filled with deep drifts. So far this year there has been a total snowfall of 190-1/2 inches at Cumbres. A year ago the snowfall at this time had totaled 306 inches at Cumbres, but only 85 inches had remained on the ground.

On the Santa Fe branch between Antonito and Tres Piedras the cuts are all filled with drifted snow, although there are only 3 inches of new snow in that territory.

Stub train service was operated Tuesday and Wednesday between Alamosa and Antonito and between Durango and Chama. No trains have gone through to Durango or Santa Fe or arrived from those points in Alamosa since Monday.
