70 Class Mikes vs K-28's

June 11, 2001 04:05PM
The White Pass operated the missing seven K-28's for a brief period during WWII. The U.S. Army refused to listen to the White Pass people about caring for equipment, or anything else about operating the White Pass for the matter, and as a result the K-28's were ruined due to improper care.
I had the opportunity to correspond with a White Pass engineer before his passing, Mr. J.D. True. Mr. True was of the opinion that the K-28's were fine locomotives, which he said was the general consensus of the White Pass hands, BUT, only during spring and summer operations.
It seems that the White Pass has/had real problems with ice build up and since they did not use flangers of a type like the Grande did, outside frame locomotives like the K-28's and the White Pass's own "Gila Monster," #69, would lift themselves off the rails when their outside frame counterweights hit the ice ledges according to Mr. True.
The White Pass people all swore the 70 Class Mikes were the best narrow gauge locomotives ever built. If you haven't seen one, check the various White Pass sites. They are graceful locomotives!
So, just to stir up the hornets nest, which type of locomotives were the best - the 70 Class or the K-28's.
The 70's, like the K-28's were dual purpose locomotives. Two are still in operating condition although the 73, still in Skagway is supposedly in need of some heavy repairs. The other is operating at Dollywood. The 71 and parts of the 72 are there as well.
