I am curious, when a steam locomotive derails and tips on its side, what kind of damage can this do to the firebox/boiler? What kind of problems might be caused by (particularly with a coal burning engine) when the fuel shifts on to the side sheet and the water is not where it is supposed to be?
Also, when a locomotive is involved in such a situation -- how would one best prevent the situation from getting worse (explosion, etc)? I am sure this would be every steam operators worst nightmare.
What would the shop/backshop possibly be facing in the way of repairs?
And that does not address what could happen to the engine crew.....
