Actually, Kansas was coal central until the fields near Frontenac and Pittsburg played out. There was coal mined just south of Topeka until the late 1940s. and as for the ten-wheelers, there were some on the roster as late as 1938. Locally (out of Topeka) the 474 and the 475 were regular engines on the Topeka-Atchison local until mid 1936.
