Growing up in rural Kansas, Petticoat Junction could have easily been set there. The mention of small towns like Pixley and Crabwell Corners, as well as the mention of Ben Miller's three legged chicken, have parallels in my childhood. I remember seeing two headed pigs, our county agent bore some similarities to Hank Kimball, and there was a place called Cruppers Corner just outside of Hutchinson that always came to mind when Crabwell Corners was mentioned. Also, the area of southern KS was criss-crossed by small branch lines (mostly ATSF, some MOPAC, etc.) where trains ran infrequently except during harvest. Podunk or abandoned towns like Croft, Coats, Cairo, Turon, Zenda, Isabel, Nashville, Spivey, Rago, etc. The only landmark left from some communities was a solitary grain elevator along the tracks. Or a double-circle CO-OP station. I actually enjoyed growing up in rural KS, but doubt that I would ever go back........ Several of the branch lines I used to be familiar with have been pulled up. Time marches on.
