That would be at Sargents and it is definitely was during scrapping.
A couple of asides:
489 was the last locomotive overhauled at Salida. I got acquainted with the former Master Mechanic from there, the late George Headington, who gave me the details when I was researching my Salida book about 10 years ago. They used a lot of parts off of the wrecked 485 (which itself had been overhauled shortly before it fell into the Salida turntable pit). They did an especially nice job on the 489, knowing that it would be the last out of the Salida backshop. I don't know that it was ever extensively overhauled again after it was taken to Alamosa, until the C&TS restored it. Maybe somebody on the C&TS has info on that?
Also, when the line over Marshall Pass was being removed in 1955, a good part of the crew was comprised of the Western State College of Gunnison football team (my alma mater). That fall, they won their conference hands down. Maybe the C&TS should let the CU football team "volunteer" for track work all summer. Maybe they might win something?
