Great question Fred. You picked up on detail that has bugged me back to the planning stages of this build.
The way our layout is set up, visitors view the loop portion of the layout from the angle where this photo was taken:

So to get the best view of the building and lettering, I placed it facing the road to the depot instead of facing the tracks like the prototype did.
The terrain is deceiving in that photo too. The who loop is on a large fill that is 2 feet off the ground in some spots. Trees also block easy access around the loop.
In that photo above, the depot is named Dulce. So I'm already taking major modeling license with Chili line style adobe buildings, Dulce station, and the Gomez store all in the same place...not to mention the tracks loop around the area
So I figured I could get away with having the building face the direction it is.
