Railroads have kinda always been that way....
"Uphill slow, downhill fast, tonnage first, safety last"

I was looking at the "employment opportunities" on a website for a major railroad the other day, just to see what was hiring...

Trainservice employees..."must be on call 24/7, be able to report for duty within 90 minutes, subject to prolonged trips over the road, multiple days away from home base", etc etc...
"prospective employees should consider the impact of this lifestyle on their personal lives"......

Yeah, no kidding!

I'm glad I quit the iron 35 years ago.

Railroading USED to be a pretty good job, but I wouldn't touch
it today with a ten foot pole....Don't care what they pay.
