The fittings that I have noticed seem to be triangular and stick down about as far as the cylinder cocks. I'm pretty sure they are to deflect rocks, dirt or snow from the vulnerable cylinder cock. I was along on a trip where they broke one. The crew spent about an hour at Cresco tank, trying to dig out the broken stub and fit a new cylinder cock.
Maybe we can get Earl or John to weigh in on this.
