According to Jim Holmes, the original cab sustained significant damage after a (rather amusing) rollover at Prather. The mill owner's son fired up the Heisler one night to impress his lady friend and ended their joyride by rolling it over on its side. It continued operating with this cab in Lake County but, after arriving in Los Gatos, "the boys" decided to fashion a wooden replacement in SP engineer Neil Vodden's basement - despite the objections of Billy Jones, who insisted a Heisler "should have only a steel cab!"
Here's a photo from the Holmes collection showing Jim (right) and Neil Vodden (left) with the old cab upon its removal. Jim has color slides of the Heisler being loaded up at Prather which will appear in my book as well as the presentation I will be giving at our launch in Los Gatos on Dec. 7th.
