Re: Very Good Coal !!! --D&RGW-RGS Branch Line?

October 09, 2005 12:08PM
Hello,
I will repeat a message from a June 2005 posting on the RGS Yahoo Group that can be related to this coal mine.
"Mr. Fred Folk obtained the following information from talking with D&RGW and RGS old timers. The story was that the D&RGW tried a K-28 from Durango westward on the RGS and only got as far as East Mancos. I thnk it was right before the line was torn out, the D&RGW was considering keeping this poriton of the RGS as far as Mancos." This was posted by a freind of Mr. Folk, Dave Bucher.
The high quality of the coal would be one reason for the D&RGW to operate the RGS to get to the mine. The mine is located a few miles south of Hesperus. I read an article about the mine from the Durango newspaper on the web. The mine owner stated in the article that they would have a lot higher coal volume sales if they had a direct rail connection.
Sincerely,
Andy Roth
