I've often wondered that myself. I believe that the Uintah did modify #50 not long after its arrival. I can only speculate that possibly their modifications were done after the boiler and plans for #51 at BLW had been started. It would be interesting to know what the length of time was from the order for #51 and its completion. The Uintah was pretty handy, and maybe it was just a matter of cost. It would have been far cheaper, in real depression era dollars to make the modifications at Atchee rather than have BLW "redesign and test".
