I am ofted called the King of Worthless trivia, but here I go to add a little to the D&S winter ops questions.
The Cascade wye was built in the summer of '81. If I remember right the track was hauled up in pre-fabricated sections to Cascade.
The Winter trains lasted from the '81-'82 winter to the '85-'86 winter. I rode the train in March '85. The D&S gave all passengers a free engineer cap. John Garrefa, friend of ours who was a conductor at the time for the D&S told us that he took a train up to Cascade in the early '80s with only one passenger, and it was not uncommon to have 20 or fewer riders.
John is right that the trips were resumed in '92, but I believe it was only on a limited basis, it was called the winter holiday train and ran from Thanksgiving to early January. I am not sure when it resumed its present schedule.
The RMRRC did have an excursion in Feb 1982 on the D&S, but I don't think there was another run by the club in winter until Dec. 1998 when they had the mixed train all painted Rio Grande. I have a video of that excursion, wish I had been there.
