Just heard through the grapevine that one of the larger tourist operations (not White Pass) just had a layoff. They held off hiring any seasonal employees, but decided they couldn't hang on to the permanent employees because they aren't sure they will even have the opportunity to open this summer.
I work part time for a shortline group, and we just got a letter from the American Shortline & Regional Railroad Association stating that under this emergency we are essential employees and requesting law enforcement to let us pass any roadblocks - assuming we aren't sick or there are other extreme factors. I recently attended safety training at a fertilizer plant and had to sign a form at the gate verifying that I hadn't recently traveled internationally, been sick or was subject to a quarantine. A coworker said he had to sign one today to access a food processing plant to inspect a track issue.
And - California's governor just banned all non-essential travel outside your home. You are supposed to be an essential employee, obtaining food, medicine, medical care or laundry services to leave your home beyond taking a walk (a dog accessory is allowed) or jog and maintaining a six foot space between you and anyone else. They are estimating half the state could become infected.
My speculation at this point (aka wild ass guess) - best case scenario if these extreme measures work we might see improvement (at least for most places in the US) by Memorial Day weekend and see things start to get back to "normal" by 4th of July. However, the news, political leaders and the medical spokespersons seem to be clearly warning that it could last much longer - let's all hope and pray that it doesn't.
