I think you are right. There was an Sn3 group headquartered at the home of the late Ken Pruitt that ran on HO track. I am sure Ernie’s K-37 is also set up to run on HO track. I seem to remember when Ernie first showed his 497 to me (about 1971), he said that he used a Tyco (?) HO 2-8-2 mechanism and drivers as a starting point.
And yes, there are very few ready-made parts on 497. In fact, when Lourdes unpacked it yesterday, I was amazed looking at the smoke box front and realizing it had been pieced together by Ernie from small bits and pieces of wire and brass— pretty remarkable!
