Now that this thread has wandered off into a discussion of the once-proposed 483-478 locomotive swap—
A couple of points here concerning the once-proposed locomotive swap. It was never seriously proposed that the C&TS trade off one of its operational K-36’s for 478. I suspect such a proposal would not go far. Instead it was discussed trading off 483, which, as far as I know, has no immediate prospect of being restored to operation, at least on the C&TS.
Additionally, the C&TS has other “big engines” it could restore to service, if it decided to expand its fleet of larger, Cumbres-capable locomotives— 497 and 492 coming to mind. Nothing wrong with a K-37. It should be remembered that 478 is a more modern and capable locomotive than 463. It could easily be placed into the rotation, at least as a very capable helper engine on the 4% grade.
-Yes, but if you are going to restore another locomotive, it makes more fiscal sense to restore the bigger one, AKA 483. i doubt we'll get a donor to pony up just so the C&TSRR will have a K-28. Even if they do, there's still the traditional costs of rebuilds which would from a business perspective be better spent on a K-36 or a K-37 (if the goal is to have as many classes operating as possible).
As to 478 being “worn out”, it is my understanding that it needs firebox or mud-ring repairs together with its regular rebuild. As I understand it, the C&TS presently has the capability and expertise to accomplish such a repair. Finally the motivation of having 463 and 168 in operation is not to meet regular operational needs but to enhance the historic aspect of the C&TS. I assume that would be the case with 478 too— if the trade were to occur.
-If restoring one locomotive that hadn't been in service for years instead of rebuilding another that is currently in service is a more feasible solution then I think there's some major underlying issues. 463 is very much in rotation to meet operational needs, though partly paid for by a private donor who wanted to see her in operation. The C&TSRR limped pretty heavily with 3 and then 4 locomotives. 168 is purely for historical aspect of the railroad and is a lot cheaper to rebuild because of its size. Because it's too small to be put into rotation except maybe as a helper in emergency situations, it probably won't get that much wear and tear meaning the rebuilds will be cheaper.
This is not meant as an argument, i'm enjoying the discussion back and forth.
