Well, a ride behind a diesel sure beats the railroad being completely shut down still. the 1203 is the only diesel they have that can make a trip to Silverton and Back. You can't replace 4 trains a day with 1 diesel that can haul maybe a bit less then a K-28. I know of 2 other diesels they could acquire that could haul 1 more train (130/140), but you still have not replaced steam and ridership is down just in number of seats. Short of paying the $1.3 Million a piece for DL535s from white pass (rich because white pass still needs them) there is really no way to dieselize the D&S without huge upfront expenses, and possibly converting standard gauge equipment at a large cost. Your fears are pretty premature.
