Or they think they don't. Money flows through a local economy. In other words, every dollar a tourist or employee of the railroad goes around a couple of times. Buy something at a store, the store pays it's employees who then go out and spend the money somewhere else and so on. Even if you're retired and your income comes from out of town the quality and quantity of goods and services available to you locally depend on how much money is moving through the local economy. Not that I expect certain people to get this, I used to talk myself blue in the face trying to explain it to folks when I lived in Gunnison back in the 1980's. As in, the coal mines and ranches, etc are just as important (back then) as the ski resort, or the college.

ps back then the resort didn't have snow machines and wasn't "world class" 'cause about 1 year in 3 they had lousy snow.
