In 1960, 498 and 497 derailed and turned over at MP326+ between Los Pinos and the Apache Canyon Crossing. Both engines were damaged but repaired and returned to service. 498's pilot plow was damaged so badly, the D&RGW left it there and pushed it off the ROW into the forest. It is still there and on Friday, Bill Moyers from Santa Fe took me down to the site., He had not been there in about 30 years. Part of D&RGW history.

Elliot Morgan My Dad, Eldon Morgan was on 497 when it turned over. None of the crew were Injured, except Ben Hindelang, on 498 the lead engine, who suffered only a bruised shoulder. Other members of the crew were Harold Thayne, conductor, Johnny Lira with Hindelang on the lead engine. Emil Madorin and Eldon F. Morgan on the second engine 497 and George Kingery of Alamosa, and Mike Smith brakeman from Durango.
