After a rainy Friday night in Como, Saturday morning started out sunny and nice. About 15 volunteers were present for the first Como workday of 2018.
- Volunteer James Mackay brought up a station wagon load of track tools that had been donated by the Union Pacific, from the now closed Burnham Shop complex in Denver.
- The track crew split into two groups, one worked on extending the “Gunnison Main” a few rail lengths while the other worked on spiking down the last few ties on the line from the depot to the turntable.
- A third group, led by Tom Lawson worked on cutting down the ties donated by the BNSF to narrow gauge width (6’). The oak ties have proven quite abusive to chainsaw chains!
Just before breaking for lunch at 1:00, the weather turned and a blizzard of wind driven hail/snow moved in, followed by rain. As such, it was decided to end the workday after lunch, though a small final project of moving a couple of wheel sets to their new display location was accomplished before everyone went home. (the wheelsets will be displayed on a short section of track at the site of the mostly open air car shop in the yards. Historic photos show that the C&S stored wheelsets in that location)
I didn’t get any photos on the actual work, just a few of the end results;
The rails of the DSP&P are now 60' closer to Gunnison!
Ties for another rail length of track are in place and ready for rails.
A pair of wheelsets were moved close to their final display location. (eventually 4 wheelsets will be displayed on the short track seen in the background)
Some of the wheel moving crew elected to take an open air trailer ride back to the roundhouse
An after lunch group photo of most, but certainly not all of the volunteers for the day
The next Como work session is scheduled for the week of Sunday June 3 through Saturday June 9. Come enjoy scenic Como for an hour or a week, volunteers of all ages and abilities are welcome!
