50 years and still going

The fact that next August marks 50 years since the last DRGW freight train seems like it is going pass by largely unremarked. The powers that be don't seem much interested, too many other things going on. I was not there for that last train, although I chased "the first train of the last year" in May, the interesting "mad dash" that ran through with two K-28's in a single (long) day. But the infamous Russo was there for the last freight and has the pix to prove it. Probably what is most remarkable about the 50 year anniversary of that last DRGW revenue run is the fact the trains are still running over Cumbres on a regular basis. Who whudda thought 50 years ago that the rails over Cumbres would still shine 50 years later. I certainly didn't. But a small group of dedicated volunteers made the impossible happen. It is really not so much an anniversary as a notable milestone associated with an amazing success story in railroad preservation. One only has to look at the plight of the EBT to appreciate how lucky we are to have a relatively healthy C&TS.
