Well, I used to walk nearly a mile each way, daily, to and from class at WSC of Colorado, (from my apartment on 12th st [green Devine's] to Hurst Hall[math/science]) at an elevation of about 7700'. If 7700' sounds low to you, I note that half of the atmosphere (by mass) is below you at that elevation... Actually, the snow in Winter and the blazing sun in Summer (it sometimes got over 80 deg F!) where more of problem than thin air.
