A Century + 10 of ng freight cars and a locomotive tid bit.

Hi,

Over the past few years, I have wanted "A Century plus 10 ..." but could not afford it. Several here recommended it. Thanks.

I was looking for an important paper and opened a box that had been sealed when Mom died in Oct 1012. I found her old radio show tapes (total of 6 boxes) and low and behold, I found a copy of "A Centurty + ten ..." inside. I do not know if I purchased it or Mom got it for me for a gift. Getting out of the house so the reverse mortgage company could take it over was a crazy time. Now it's like Christmas.

I'ts a great book.

There has been discussions about the D&RG motive power. Specifically why there were no Fairlies on the D&RG (except for the Mountaineer) and there were Baldwin 2-4-0s and 2-6-0s.

On page 19 of the book second paragraph, "The locomotives were ordered from Baldwin rather than Fairlies from England because Palmer could trade D&RG Bonds at a discount for the home grown product."

Now it makes sense why the facts show the D&RG purchased Baldwins and not Fairlies.

Plop Plop fizz fizz. Oh what a relief it is.

P.S.
There was a recent discussion on rail lengths.

These (17' 4-wheel flat cars - ed.) were used in pairs to carry rail. . . . a pair of cars could carry 700 yards of 30 pound rail or twenty five 28' foot (sic) lengths."
