65 years ago today, the last ET&WNC train entered the Elizabethton yard from the daily run to North Carolina, dropped the fires and ended 3-foot operations for good.
The locals to this day still remember the "Tweetsie" fondly.
A few pieces of rolling stock and locomotive # 12 still exist, but most evidence of the RR is gone today. A small portion of the most scenic part of the line still has rails on it, laid back in place after the ET&WNC was done: [

For many years, this was the best kept secret in RR history, even among train fans. Thankfully, a resurgence in interest in the RR and an active historical society, has helped many items from the road get preserved today.
