There was a two-engine Phraud-O-Phreight from Antonito yesterday. Departure was delayed by about half an hour, so the sunrise shots were done at m.p. 285.9 instead of at Lava Tank. Here's the train approaching the trestle where a horsethief named Ferguson was duly hanged (so the story goes)
:
I skeedadled quickly out of the picture after taking this one while the train was backing for the first run-by
:
Helper #489 crossing the culvert (once upon a time a low, two-span trestle) at m.p. 286.72, as seen from the hill above the culvert
(once upon a time the low, three-span trestle under which a troll is rumored to have dwelt) at m.p. 287.50
:
After the run-bys at Lava there was another delay due to a hotbox
; the sky had started to darken by the time the train approached The Whiplash
:
Late in the day there were a few bright moments as the sun ducked under the clouds
:
As soon as they got to Cumbres they split the train in front of the helper, hooked up to the caboose, and headed for Chama. The helper brought the rest of the train down the hill quite a while later.
