Silverton Northern - Green Mountaim Branch

August 04, 2015 10:24AM
The Green Mountain Branch of the Silverton Northern branched off of the main at Howardsville to head up Cunningham Gulch. the branch extended over 2 miles up the gulch. I've been curious to see if any traces could be found at the mouth of the gulch southwest of the present day road.

The overlay below shows the grade heading into the gulch as it crosses Cunningham Creek three times. I figured that I should be able to spot some remnants for the eastern most crossing, 12820 on the map (what I would call bridge three of the branch).

The following shot appears to be the eastern abutment of bridge three. Note the heavy timber at the bottom of the rock stack and what appears to be part of a tie up on the grade behind the rocks.

The grade is heavily overgrown but a shelf can be seen on the southwest side of the creek.

Up around the bend a little ways an opening in the trees and a flat shelf.

The Howardsville information sign just off the main road before crossing Cunningham Creek.
