Split switches are much safer when run through from the frog when the points are set wrong. Split switch points were often sprung so a wrong move caused no damage at all.

Stub switches become harder to use as rail weight got heavier.

Stub switches had a gap that varied with temperature, and caused pounding of the rail ends by wheels. Sometimes they became inoperable on hot days when the gap closed.
