Sumpter Valley Trackwork

August 18, 2014 10:02PM
Any track that is being used will move and needs periodic attention to return it to good condition. While our 42 ton Heisler follows uneven track well, the #19 is almost 3 times as heavy and has a longer rigid wheelbase that not only moves the track around more but also uneven track works the suspension more and causes premature wear. After several years focusing on the steam locomotives 15 year boiler overhauls and improving the rolling stock, we now need to get out and give some attention to the track.

Jerry, our roadmaster, has selected a section that has both a dip and crosslevel problems.

Half done, time for a break. The motor car has been moved down onto the newly leveled section.

Back to work jacking up the rails and ties and tamping ballast under the ties.
