I recently purchased an Adlake caboose marker lamp to keep my switch lamp company. The caboose light has CB&Q RR stamped on it. I found it interesting that its red lens is slightly larger than the green lenses and it is neat that you raise one of the green lenses to light the lamp. Also interesting that the lamp can be rotated on the bracket that holds it to the side of the caboose so that either red or green can be displayed forward or aft. My understanding is that usually the red lens would face rearward. However if the train was clear in a siding, the green lens would face back to indicate to approaching trains that it was safe to pass. I also understand that some NG cabooses mounted the markers on an adjustable bracket so as to keep the lights from being torn off from close clearance.
This lamp is an oil burner and I’m not sure of the year(s) it was used. I was wondering if/when the railroads ever switched over to battery operated caboose marker lamps.
