"Roughing It in a Rider Boxcar" - May 25th, 2010

As of 04/15/10, there is only one caboose seat still available for the May 25 "Springtime in the Rockies" excursion on the C&TS. For those hardy souls who don't mind 'Roughing It' a little in order to get a few special photos, there are still about two dozen seats available in the rider boxcar.
Here's a photo of one of the original rider boxcars, taken by Ernie Robart in May, 1971:
The benches have been replaced by plastic seats, and IIRC the steps now fold up - but little else has changed ...
Weather in the Rockies is utterly unpredictable - especially in mid-Spring. It could be 70° in the afternoon, and -5° - and snowing hard - that same night (or vice-versa). Dress in layers, and bring ski pants and a warm jacket or parka just in case.
To answer the many questions posted lately about the May 25th excursion on the C&TS, here's a copy of the flyer which has been posted on the Friends website and which Tim Tennant distributed on 04/17 at the California meeting of the Friends at the Orange Empire Trolley Museum:
Current plans are to prep #489 for painting on 05/16, apply the green jacket on 05/17 so that the paint will be dry enough for her to be used on opening day - 05/22 - and to wash the engine if necessary on 05/24 so that her green jacket will be sparkling clean on 05/25 .... at least until we get to Tunnel #1!
Please note that only two or three assistants are needed on 05/16, -17 and -24, and that only those who have signed an insurance waiver will be allowed into the shop area.
