Not sure if it's the same one, but there used to be a video on steamlocomotive.info (it's been removed) of 489 sporting a rather high-pitched whistle, unlike any I'd heard before. On a similar note, when I rode the D&S for the first time back around '87 or so, 480 was sporting a very unpleasant-sounding whistle, very shrill and hard on the ears. I was swayed by the sweet sounds made by our loco, 497 (a deeper tone than what the C&TS had on her) and the very deep and beautiful whistle 481 had. I'm glad they've switched up 480's, though I don't know if the three-chime suits her, but I always felt that 497 & 481 got shafted when their whistles were changed. The newer ones are okay, but they don't compare to what they used to have.
