When my brother and i visited chama back in '99 or so, we had one of the shop guys take us up in the cab of the 489 for a little tour. It took us about 2 seconds to simultaneously lock eyes on the grate shaker hanging in the tender. Marked on the side, with a welder, was the number "485!" Of course we had to pick it up and hold it at that point, knowing that particular locomotive had been gone for decades. it was quite a thrill holding one of the few, if not only, identifiable parts from the 485!
The crewman told us that the 489 had received quite a few parts from the donor 485. I'm sure someone out there knows more than i do about what all got traded over.
Next time you get to visit the ole 489, take a peek inside at that shaker! It's a trip!
