This happened a couple of weeks ago:
The evidence: You can see where the tire has been moving on the wheel center by the scrape mark of tire retaining clip against the tire..
Step 1, remove the main rod. First the wrist pin comes out with some persuasion from a BIG hammer...
A fork lift comes in handy for man-handling the rods. Here the back side rod comes off.
Next the front side rod is removed...
A rodless mogul...(a 2-3-0?)
A 50-ton jack is placed under the axle to get the wieght off the rail. With the wheel just barely off the rail, the rail is cut and removed from under the wheel....
The heater rig is attached and the tire heated to about 450 degrees...
With tire loose on the center, steel shim is inserted between the tire and center.
When the shim is seated, clamps are applied against the tire and center to assure the tire is seated on the center correctly as it cools....
Now, put it all back together, and we're back on the road...
