The current version of Volume 1 (1960's) of our "Save #483" screen saver consists of 83 images at 1200x1600 dpi - about 5.5MB each, uncompressed, or over 450 MB total. The screen-saver CDs - complete with sound - sell for $20 each.
100% of the proceeds go to a separate Friends account for the rebuilding of #483. See [
www.drgw483.net] for slideshows of all 83 images (in low resolution) from Volume 1. A few sample images from the nearly finished Volume 2 are shown below, at 360x480 dpi resolution.
The large files provide very sharp, high resolution images, but are too big for some systems. I am considering reducing the resolution of the 83 images in Volume 2 (1970's) to 960x1280 dpi (~3.5MB each, 290MB total) or even 768x1024 dpi (~2.3MB each, 190MB total). Roger and I have also discussed putting both of these resolutions on one CD, giving the buyer the choice of which to install to best fit the equipment available. I would then go back and re-do the images for Volume 1, making them available in either 960x1280 dpi, 768x1024 dpi, or perhaps both if demand warrants. 1200x1920 dpi widescreen has also been suggested, along with moderate compression to save disk space without compromising the quality of the images.
Question 1: IF you have already purchased a Volume-1 CD from Roger, how well did it work for you?
[ - ] loaded easily, runs fine . . . . [ _ ] took some effort, but it works . . . . [ _ ] runs, but slow & jerky . . . . [ _ ] too big for my system.
Question 2: If you have not yet purchased one, but are considering doing so, which size would
YOU prefer?
[ _ ] 768x1024 . . . . [ _ ] 960x1280 . . . . [ _ ] 1200x1600 hi-res . . . . [ _ ] 1200x1920 widescreen
Additional hi-res images of C&TS operations in the 1970's are urgently needed to replace about a dozen of my so-so ones on Volume 2 of the #483 $creen $aver. Photos of the very first train into Chama on Labor Day Weekend 1970 would be especially appreciated (Ernie Robart, are you listening?), as would a few more images of snowplow operations in the late 1970's.
